Poor drainage on a gravity belt thickener can originate on the return side of the belt, well before freshly conditioned sludge arrives. If wash sprays leave strips of blinded fabric, additional polymer may make larger flocs without restoring usable drainage area. Check cleaning performance and distribution before treating a wet discharge as evidence of insufficient chemical dose.
Read the pattern across the belt
Observe from a safe position with guards in place. Uneven pooling across the width suggests a different investigation from uniformly slow drainage. A recurring wet strip can correspond to spray coverage, belt condition or feed distribution. A whole-width deterioration may instead follow a change in sludge characteristics, hydraulic loading or preparation quality.
Map the observation to the return-belt wash system. Inspect nozzles and strainers only under the site's isolation procedure. Pressure at a supply gauge does not prove that every nozzle delivers its intended pattern. A partially blocked spray bar can show an apparently reasonable pressure while leaving part of the belt poorly cleaned.
Check the quality of reused wash water
If clarified or recycled water supplies the spray system, review suspended solids and the upstream strainer arrangement. A change in reuse-water quality can introduce fine solids or debris to the cleaning circuit. Record how often strainers are cleaned and whether nozzle problems recur after a particular process event. Do not remove filtration simply to restore immediate flow without reviewing the consequences.

Compare cleaned and operating conditions fairly
After approved cleaning or nozzle maintenance, establish the same feed rate and belt setting used for the earlier observation where operationally appropriate. Compare free drainage, thickened sludge concentration and filtrate solids. If drainage returns without a dose change, that is useful evidence for a maintenance cause, although it does not rule out a separate chemical optimisation opportunity.
If performance remains poor across a verified clean belt, then investigate loading and conditioning. Check whether feed has become thinner, whether hydraulic throughput has increased, and whether the floc survives distribution onto the belt. Make one controlled adjustment at a time and allow the material to move through the machine before collecting comparison samples.
Add cleaning to the performance record
Include wash pressure, strainer condition, spray coverage observations and cleaning events beside polymer consumption in the shift log. Trend the time between cleaning interventions rather than relying on memory. An increasing cleaning frequency may expose a gradual reuse-water or belt-age problem before thickening capacity is lost. The desired outcome is sustained drainage with acceptable solids capture, not a temporary improvement bought through repeated chemical increases.
